AUDIO TAPE RESTORATION & RECOVERY

AUDIO TAPE RESTORATION & RECOVERY FOR MOLDY, WATER, HEAT DAMAGED OR STICKY-SHED SYNDROME TAPE & THE BAKING PROCESS

Sometimes Sticky-tape syndrome or (sticky-shed syndrome), can occur when a tape’s binder layer begins to delaminate from the base material is the most difficult to restore. The process of bringing a tape back to a playable condition can be a complicated procedure. Tapes in this condition will not playback easily, if at all.

If properly identified, these tapes can benefit from exposure to elevated temperatures (Baking) for several hours, which bakes the binder back onto the base material. This consolidation of binder and base stabilizes the tape system so that it can be played once while the information is copied on to a more stable format. Baking tapes is an extreme measure and only used on particular types of audio tape as a final option to unbound the sticky tape. The results from the baking process are not always successful. Depending on what is required to get stable, clean audio and convert the tape to a digital file format. Cost is on a per hour basis for Restoration and conversion and would be calculated upon inspection of the audio tape. Discounts on volume.

Deposit Required for all audio Restoration: Unlike film were we can preview or see images before restoration to check the content for you, that is not possible with audio or video tape. Audio that is physically broken or damaged by mold, heat or water must be restored and cleaned first before checking it’s content. Meaning you would be required to pay a non refundable deposit for the Restoration before we convert the tape. Restoration of audio tape is a very time consuming, lengthy process and sometimes and be expensive depending on your quantity and damaged condition. If you do not know the content of your tapes, please be aware there are costs involved before checking your audio tape content before conversion.

WAV (WAVEFORM AUDIO FILE FORMAT) AUDIO INFORMATION

We use commercial quality turntables, cassette decks, DAT decks, reel to reel decks, CD burners and digital audio mixers and can master to Professional Quality CD-Rs (not the cheap ones) with options to use mastering audio CDs or gold CDs or place files on a thumb or hard drive. We provide the option of analog audio (all formats) re-mastered and recorded in real-time with NO compression to “RAW” WAV files.  WAV audio format is uncompressed audio in the linear pulse code modulation (LPCM) format. LPCM is also the standard audio coding format for audio CDs, which store two-channel LPCM audio sampled at 44,100 Hz with 16 bits per sample. Since LPCM is uncompressed and retains all of the samples of an audio track, professional users or audio experts use the WAV format with LPCM audio for maximum audio quality. WAV FILES are compatible with Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems.

WAV files can be edited with your audio editing program or played on any computer and compatible CD players that can play “WAV” files.

We DO NOT convert tapes direct to MP3 files which are highly compressed and do not provide the best possible audio quality. If you want MP3 we can convert the WAV files we created to Mp3 at additional cost.

AUDIO TAPE FORMATS

MINI-CASSETTE & MICROCASSETTE AUDIO TAPES

TMTV

Mini/Micro audio and dictation tapes.

The Mini-Cassette is is different from a Microcassette. Each use a different type of playback or recording deck. Tapes were no longer then 60 minutes. Used for dictation, answering machines and voice recording. We can convert either format.

AUDIO CASSETTE TAPES

TMTV

1/4″ AUDIO CASSETTE TAPE

Analog audio Cassettes (also known as compact cassettes) come in various lengths. Unless you have logged the tape and know the duration, it is hard to predict how long each tape is. Some tapes are marked 20 minutes, 30 minutes and so on, but the tapes may not be full if they were home recorded. Most store bought tapes will have the length marked on them which will make it easier to predict how many tapes will fit on each 80 minutes CD. It is hard to give an exact quote unless you know the length of each tape you want transferred.

1/4″ REEL TO REEL TAPE

TMTV

The first reel to reel tape recorders were introduced in Canada and USA in the late forties.

Tracks – Originally machines and tapes were full track, recording across the full width of the tape.
Then half track allowing two separate mono recordings on each side of a tape, or one single stereo recording.
Most open reel recordings are on 1/4″ tape and recorded in one of the following forms…

Speed – 15, 7.5, 3.75, 1.78 IPS (inches per second)

Reel size – 7″ (1200ft), 5″ (600ft) or 3″ (100′).

For your guidance, below are the approximate running times (one pass) of the various reel sizes.

Length Spool (Reel) Diameter 15 ips
(38 cm)
7.5 ips
(19 cm)
3.75 ips
(9.5 cm)
1.78 ips
(4.9 cm)
100 ft 3″ ONE SIDE 5 min 10 min 16 min 30 min
600 ft 5″ ONE SIDE 8 min 16 min 32 min 60 min
1200 ft 7″ ONE SIDE 16 min 32 min 64 min 90 min
The total cost depends on the length of the tapes in minutes.

Unless you have logged the tape and know the duration, it is hard to predict how long each tape is. Knowing the size of the reel does not mean too much but we can base a quote by time. (see above) It depends on how thick the tape is (which determines the length of the tape), the speed at which it was recorded, the number of tracks, if the tape was recorded on both sides, etc. Armed with this knowledge, you can order based on an “estimated” length of the tape.

We will not know the length of each tape until we actually finish recording.

If, after we begin processing, we find out that the tape is blank or can not be recorded, we will not convert the tape, but charge only return shipping of the material to the customer if you want it returned.

DIGITAL AUDIO TAPE (DAT)

DAT (Digital Audio Tape)

(DAT or R-DAT) recording and playback medium developed by Sony and introduced in 1987.

As Sony has ceased production of new recorders, it has become more difficult to play archived recordings in this format unless they are copied to other formats or hard drives. DATs should not be considered as an option for long-term archival storage, however, as they are susceptible to high error rates that cause dropouts, pops, and other digital anomalies as they age.

8 TRACK AUDIO TAPE CARTRIDGE

TMTV

The average 8 track is the same as an LP length, between 40 to 45 minutes in length.

During conversion of Audio cassettes, 8 track tapes, Reel to Reel audio tapes, LPs, 45s & 78s, individual tracks can be identified, separated and numbered to allow each track to be accessed instantly and accurately in the same manner as a commercial disc.
